NTT DOCOMO and NEC have teamed up to demonstrate faster data transmission between multiple virtual machines by utilizing Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) offloading technology on the server network interface cards (NICs). The Japanese telecom service provider and solution provider said that they have completed a proof-of-concept (POC) using the new technology to achieve six times faster data transmission.
According to a statement by both firms, the trials verified that virtual machines that run on open-source OpenStack Neutron is capable of providing up to 16 Gbps data transmission speeds. It added that the trials, the largest scale ever involving OpenStack Neutron, were conducted in cooperation with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, VirtualTech Japan Inc., NTT Advanced Technology Corporation, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Tokyo University and Dell Japan Inc.
DOCOMO expects to introduce OpenStack Neutron on a commercial basis to provide faster and more stable cloud services by March 2016. DOCOMO and NEC said that both firms will continue working through the OpenStack Foundation to help upgrade cloud-based mobile services, which are expected to become a mainstream application for LTE-Advanced and future 5G mobile networks.
