US-based Over-the-Top(OTT) provider, Netflix has been blocked by Indonesian state-owned service provider, Telkom, denying its subscribers access to content offered on Netflix, starting Wednesday at midnight. Telkom broadband subscribers on its various plans including Indihome, WiFi.id, and mobile data will be affected by the rule.
The operator cited issues relating to permit and unfiltered content as the reasons for blocking the service.
The goverment of Indonesia via the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology had earlier assured subscribers that it will not block the service and has given Netflix one month to comply with Indonesian regulations, including setting up of a legal entity in the country and obtaining proper operational licenses.
Netflix started offering its streaming service in Indonesia early this month as part of its global expansion that covers over 190 countries.
Netflix switched on its global expansion during its CES keynote. https://t.co/lT14ixZlOn via @WSJD
