Security and privacy concerns in the use of internet has seen a strong trend in the use of security measures such as encryption or anonymity software and rise in secure traffic on fixed broadband networks. According to Procera, a leading player in internet intelligence solutions, based on their study on the increase in secure traffic, there is a steady growth in the segment with a few sharp spikes based on events such as the recent release of the Guardian reports on worldwide monitoring of Internet usage. While sites offering email and banking services are mostly secured, others offering services that carry a lot of very personal data such as Facebook and Twitter have secured their sites in the last couple of years. How does this bode for mobile traffic? According to Procera, most applications accessed on mobile devices are already secured via encryption while sites that subscribers accesss most frequently, such as banking and social sites are mostly secured sites, resulting in smaller increases in the volume of secure traffic on mobile networks.
