The strong upward trend in the usage of mobile data is already being reflected in the vendors' market. According to ABI Research, the packet data core network equipment saw an increase of sales by 22% in Q1 2013 compared the Q4 2012. Despite the 12% decline in the overall mobile core network equipment market during the same period, the data network continued to expand as operators rolled out their LTE services for large numbers of data hungry subscribers and as smart mobile devices record more sales than ever. With the advent of VoLTE and OTT voice applications, this trend is expected to continue in the mid and long term, with ABI projecting the Mobile Packet Data Core Network infrastructure market to reach $1.8B in 2013, with cumulative figure of $10B for the tenure.
“Continued growth in 3G and 4G traffic will propel the Mobile Packet Core Infrastructure to a cumulative $10B market over the next five years,” stated Joe Hoffman, principal analyst. “Ericsson remains the leader in overall core network market share,” added Hoffman, “and while they retain that position, there will be increasing pressure from Huawei and others as the market trends to 4G.”
