Cisco Buys Real Time Communication API Specialist Tropo

Cisco, Thursday announced the company will acquire Tropo, a privately held company providing a cloud API platform that makes it simple for customers and developers to embed real-time communications within their applications. The Tropo team will join the Collaboration Technology Group under the leadership of Rowan Trollope, SVP and general manager.

Tropo which has more than 200,000 developers will allow Cisco to extend its developer network and ecosystem to be more of a cloud collaboration player as well as an application provider. Both companies will provide a collaboration platform-as-a-service, which allows customers and developers to create and sell new communications services with minimal development effort.

Announcing this in a blog post, Cisco notes that "Together, we will help extend the Cisco platform to third party endpoints and applications via modern APIs and enable Cisco to better serve the developer community.” At the same time, Tropos wrote that "Six years ago we launched Tropo with the idea to make it easy to power phone calls through a simple API. Since then, we’ve empowered thousands of developers to add voice and messaging to their applications".
