Telstra is leveraging PEN (Pacnet's Enabled Network), Asia's first Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) platform to extend its Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtulization (NFV) solutions globally. The move follows the company’s recent acquisition of Pacnet.

The largest service provider in Australia, said on Wednesday that the platform will now be available to customers globally, enabling high-performance, self-provisioned dynamic network services across 25 Points of Presence across eight countries – including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and United Kingdom – with additional connectivity options into public cloud services to bridge hybrid cloud deployments.

According to Telstra, the PEN which is built on the Telstra Global Network brings Network Function Virtualisation capabilities to enhance the agility of the service that enables customers to order network appliances – such as routers and firewalls – on demand, making the network less rigid and allowing their customers to respond quickly to unforeseen network resource requirements. Telstra added that with the PEN Platform, network provisioning is completely automated and services that traditionally take weeks can be provisioned in minutes with customers being able to dynamically allocate and scale the bandwidth required.

While software, servers and storage have all become virtualised over the past decade, networks have largely remained unchanged. Telstra’s new PEN Platform reimagines the role of traditional telecommunications and enables organisations to complement traditional network approaches with SDN technology, which allows for bandwidth to be provisioned on demand, matched to application characteristics and deployed across the specific routes our customers need.
