Firefox has announced that El Salvador has become the first Central American country to offer Firefox OS smartphones. Salvadorians can now buy the ZTE Open II at Telefónica Movistar points of sale throughout the country.

According to Telefonica, Telefónica will offer Firefox OS phones in additional countries in Central America in coming months, and will continue expanding its portfolio of Firefox OS devices in other Latin American markets.

Firefox OS, an open source project based on HTML5 resulting from combined efforts between Mozilla, other technology companies, and a large community of volunteers around the world, comes with built-in social integration with Facebook and Twitter, HERE Maps with offline capabilities, much-loved features like the Firefox Web browser, the Firefox Marketplace and more.

“We are very pleased that Firefox OS has arrived in El Salvador, which marks a significant milestone as the first launch in Central America, and another step toward Telefónica offering Firefox OS across all their Latin American markets. Our partnership with Movistar allows us to put the power of the Web in the hands of more people and provide a comprehensive but affordable smartphone experience for Central Americans who previously had not had access to one.”
