The world will be watching Telstra as it kicks off the Traffic Management Trial in its effort to manage traffic on the fixed broadband network. The exercise is expected to garner great interest as it may set the precedence for Operators around the globe to start managing traffic, content and thus services on the fixed network. The Trial will be conducted on voluntary participation basis but is confined to the district of Victoria. Subsribers will be asked to provide feedback on the speed and user experience. The exercise will provide Telstra an assessment of the impact of its traffic management techniques on the network and will enable it to tailor its management policies to manage traffic congestion and provide other value added services on its fixed broadband network.
“Telstra’s goal is to optimise the customer experience by managing congestion on its ADSL network through price, investment and technical means. Traffic on Telstra’s ADSL network has on average doubled every 12 months for the past four years, driven to a large extent by growth in demand for real time entertainment. Without continued congestion management further growth in traffic will result in more congestion at peak times, negatively impacting on the customer experience.’
