Richard Branson this week said that his company Virgin Galactic, a British commercial spaceflight company within the Virgin Group will launch as many as 2,400 small satellites to set up a constellation capable of bringing broadband communications to populations without broadband connectivity. Based on his recent blog post, Richard Branson said that OneWeb, a joint venture between Virgin Group and Qualcomm, will build, launch and operate the world's largest ever satellite network. According to Richard, the project - LauncherOne - will initially launch a low-earth-orbit satellite constellation of 648 satellites, and is projected to expand to reach the three billion people in hard to reach areas who are currently not connected.

Virgin Galactic's LauncherOne programme will launch the satellites into space at a "much lower cost and with greater reliability" than conventional rockets, Branson said. The billionaire businessman went on to say that Virgin Galactic has always planned to build a commercial spaceline that can create positive change back on earth.
